D.E.P Acting Commissioner Bob Martin are outraged over the Army Corps decision to start dredging the Delaware River without releasing any details of where the sediments will be dumped and disposed of. Christie is outraged that the Arm Corps has been studying the project for more than 12 years, but still fail to release alternative plans to dumping the polluted sediments into South Jersey.
Despite the most recent reports that indicate the rapid increase in contaminated sediments. The Army Corps has not updated a number of environmental studies for the Delaware River project since 1997. Including evaluations on the effects of the region’s water supplies, wetlands, and wildlife. They also failed to acknowledge the potential impacts of the huge oil spill in 2004 on the river sediments. The DEP just wants more tests and studies on the effects of the 100 mile project. New Jersey is pursuing legal action in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey challenging the Army Corps’ decision to move ahead with the project and intervened in an action filed by the state of Delaware.
